Description
The Payton tomb, located approximately 11 metres south of the chancel of the Church of Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon-Avon, dates from around 1820. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a moulded plinth and an edge to the top slab. The south side of the tomb records the names of Elizabeth and John Payton, who died in 1802 and 1818, respectively, while the north side commemorates William Shakespeare Payton, who died in 1789. John Payton was the proprietor of the White Lion hotel, a significant coaching inn during the 18th and 19th centuries, and he, or possibly his father, was involved in organizing the 1769 Shakespeare Jubilee.
