Description
This is an L-shaped outbuilding, located approximately 20 meters north of Moat Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century but may include some medieval stonework, along with later additions and alterations. The structure is timber framed and sits on a plinth made of gritstone and sandstone rubble, topped with a plain tile roof. The building has an L-plan layout, with the main range running from northwest to southeast and a gabled range projecting to the southwest, which was partly reconstructed in the mid-19th century.
The outbuilding has two levels. The framing is exposed on the north side, although it has been partly damaged by 19th-century lean-to additions. There are two small square panels above the dressed sandstone plinth. The northwest bay has been rebuilt in 19th-century red brick. On the south side, there are C20 double doors at the angle with the gabled projection, along with fixed-light windows—one on the first floor and two on the ground floor. The gabled projection features a centrally located window on the first floor and a boarded door to the left on the ground floor, both with segmental heads.
Inside, the dressed sandstone plinth is visible on the former back wall. The roof has double purlins with raking struts from cambered tie beams that support the principal rafters. The ground floor ceiling contains re-used beams, and there is evidence of a former blacksmith's furnace. This outbuilding is included in the listing with the understanding that it was likely part of the fortified predecessor to Moat Farmhouse.
