Description
The Stapleton War Memorial is a churchyard monument aligned with the eastern end of the church chancel. Made of limestone ashlar, it features a wheel-head, Celtic cross adorned with knot patterns carved in relief on the arms and a central domed knop. The tapered, rectangular shaft connects to a similarly tapered base, which has a moulded cap. On the north-eastern face, it is inscribed: ‘+ / TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THOSE MEN CONNECTED / WITH THIS PARISH AND CHURCH / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918’. The sides of the monument bear the names of the fallen. The rear, south-western face carries the inscription: ‘SONS OF THIS PLACE. LET THIS BE SAID. / THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD. / THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT YOU WHO LIVE MIGHT REAP / A RICHER HARVEST ERE YOU FALL ASLEEP.’ The plinth of the memorial is stepped.
