Description

Chatford Farmhouse is probably of early 17th-century origin, with later additions and alterations. It is a timber-framed building, now largely rendered and faced with red brick, and has plain tile roofs. Originally a hall with a two-bay cross-wing projecting to the left, it was extended in the mid-19th century with a brick addition at a right angle to the rear on the right side. The main part of the house is one storey and has an attic, with a dentilled eaves cornice. The gable end of the hall range and the rear gable of the cross-wing retain exposed timber framing, showing V-struts from the collar, a characteristic feature of 17th-century timber framing. The windows are irregularly placed and are largely late 19th and 20th-century casements, with one on each floor of the cross-wing and one to the left and one to the right in the hall range, all with segmental heads. A gabled eaves dormer is above the left window. A doorway is blocked slightly to the left of the centre, with the present entrance immediately to the right. A six-panel door is located under a trellised porch to the left of the cross-wing. A tall external stack stands on the back wall, with a later brick lean-to behind it. There is another external stack in the angle between the cross-wing and the hall range, and a smaller subsidiary stack behind the ridge on the right side of the hall range.

Inside, the right-hand room of the hall range has chamfered cross and spine beams, with a spine beam and heavy joists in the room to the left.
