Description
The Stables is a former barn located at Chatford Farm, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The structure features a timber frame set on a sandstone rubble plinth, with red brick infill. It has been partly rebuilt in mid-19th century red brick and has a roof made of machine and plain tiles. The building has two levels, with square panels in the framing, three from the cill to the wall-plate, and long straight tension braces. The original threshing entrance has been blocked with light timber framing, likely from the 20th century, and red brick infill. There are several mid-19th century openings, some with segmental heads, and eaves hatches on the west side.
Inside, the barn features a Queen post roof supported by five bays with staggered purlins. The Stables is included for its group value with the surrounding structures.
