Description
Red House is a farmhouse, now divided into two cottages. It was originally built in the early to mid-17th century, with later additions and alterations, including repairs and remodelling in 1819, 1854, and 1916, and a further extension in the early to mid-20th century. The house is timber framed with rendered wattle and daub infill (roughcast to the front) on a rubblestone plinth, with the stone being higher to the left and continuing to the left gable end. It has a slate roof. The house is one storey and attic, and the original part comprised three framed bays.
The windows have an irregular arrangement. There are 19th-century casements to the left and immediately to the right of the boarded front door, which is sheltered by a 19th-century gabled timber hood. A 20th-century casement is to the right of the 17th-century part, and a contemporary metal casement is in the 20th-century extension. There are three gabled dormers breaking the eaves: two are 19th century and one is 20th century. Datestones above the left and centre windows display the initials "R" and the dates 1916 and 1854 respectively, while a datestone on the gable of the centre dormer is inscribed “B/1819.”
The timber framing is exposed to the rear wall; the panels are square and rectangular, extending from the cill to the wall-plate. Large external lateral rubblestone stacks with red brick shafts are located to the left and right. A 19th-century rubblestone lean-to is attached to the left gable end.
The interior of the left part of the building (No. 8, which was empty at the time of resurvey in July 1986) features chamfered spine beams, heavy joists, and corner fireplaces.
