Description

Shawford Cottage is a farmhouse, later divided into three cottages and now a single residence, dating back to the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th and 20th centuries. The house has a timber-frame core which is now encased in brick and slate, all colourwashed, and has an old plain tile roof. It is four bays wide and double pile with two storeys. A central planked door sits within a solid frame and is covered by a gabled hood, positioned to the left of the chimney stack. To the left of the door are two 2-light leaded casement windows dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, and to the right are three similar windows. At the left end of the front is an 18th century 16-pane segmental head sash window. On the first floor, the raised eaves incorporate original dormers into the walls, and there are 2-light casement windows. The roof is hipped and has a ridge stack to the left of centre. Inside, a stud wall of timber with reed and daub infill is visible between the ranges. On the first floor of the right bay, there was originally a separate octagonal roof, possibly used as a chapel.
