Description

The Forge is a house and former smithy located on High Street in Eardisley. It dates back to the 14th century, with alterations likely made in the 17th century, mid-19th century, and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick infill and some replacement walling, topped with a stone-tiled roof laid in diminishing courses, featuring some machine tiles. The roof is half-hipped at the south end and has a brick ridge stack.

This cruck hall house consists of three framed bays aligned north to south, with an inserted chimney at the junction of the northern and central bays. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The framing reveals a cruck truss at the south end, with two and three panels from the sill to the wall-plate.

On the east front elevation, there is a 2-light 19th-century casement window with a cambered brick head and a small rectangular window on the ground floor. Above, there are a raking-top dormer and a gabled dormer, both featuring 2-light casements. The main entrance, located in the north bay, has a gabled canopy supported by shaped brackets and a half-glazed 19th-century door.

Adjoining the southern end of the front elevation is a large single-storey 20th-century wing, along with a large rear wing from the same period. Inside, the cruck truss between the central and north bay has a chamfered arch-braced collar, and one other cruck truss remains.
