Description

The Holme is a house dating back to the 15th century, with alterations in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is a timber-framed building with painted brick infill and replacement walling on a rubble base, with some areas refaced in rubble and roughcast. Brick additions are present, and the roof is slate with brick ridge stacks. The house has a hall and cross-wing plan, with the hall part likely consisting of two framed bays aligned east/west, including a central inserted chimney, and a cross-wing of three bays at the west end. It is two storeys high. The hall part’s first floor has two rows of square panels. The north front has a ground floor and two first-floor cross-casements, a 20th-century canted bay window with a lean-to roof, a 2-light casement with a cambered brick head, and a main entrance with a ledged and battened door and plank weathering extending above a window. Most windows have leaded lights. The cross-wing’s gable end has a first-floor cross-casement, and the gable retains original bargeboards with cusped blind traceried panelling and a pendant finial. The west side of the cross-wing, facing the High Street, has three ground and first-floor cross-casements. A single-storey brick wing is attached to the east end of the hall. Internally, original roof construction remains, including chamfered tie-beams; the cross-wing was originally of four bays. The hall range retains some swept braces, and there is some 17th-century panelling.
