Description

Cartref is a house dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the 18th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick and rendered infill on a rubble base, along with some painted rubble walling and slate roofs. The building has one plus two framed bays aligned east to west. The east end includes an external painted rubble chimney with tiled offsets, a brick stack, and a probable bread oven. At the west end, there is a smaller external painted rubble chimney with a diagonal rubble stack capped with brick. The house is single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The framing consists of two rows of panels from the sill to the original wall-plate, with an additional row added when the roof was raised in the 18th century. A collar and tie-beam truss is partly exposed at the east end. On the north front elevation, the single-bay section to the left is lower and slightly recessed, featuring a 2-light ground floor casement with a plank weathering and a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement. The two-bay section has two ground floor 2-light casements, two gabled dormers with 2-light casements, and the main entrance to the left, which is covered by a 20th-century gabled canopy supported by straight timber brackets and features a ledged and battened door.
