Description

The Old Forge is a former smithy and house, now used as a house. It likely dates from the late 16th century and has been altered in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick infill set on a rubble base, partly roughcast and weatherboarded, topped with a machine-tiled roof and a brick ridge stack. It consists of four framed bays aligned north to south, with the two southernmost bays being larger and featuring an external rubble chimney with a brick stack on the east side. There is also a chimney at the junction with the two narrower northern bays. The building has two storeys, and the framing shows four panels from the sill to the wall-plate. The first floor jetties out to the southwest on a moulded bressummer, while the jetty at the southern end has been under-built, although the gable remains jettied. No trusses are exposed.

On the east front elevation, the ground floor includes a 3-light casement and two single-light casements with plank weatherings. The first floor has four 2-light casements and a square light. The main entrance is located to the right of centre and features a gabled canopy on metal brackets, along with a half-glazed 20th-century door framed by a moulded architrave. At the right end of the building, there is a double doorway.
