Description

This is a row of twelve houses, numbered 2 to 12 St Ethelbert Street, dating from the early 19th century. They are located in Hereford. The houses are built of stucco, with a Welsh slate roof and six brick ridge stacks. They are three storeys high, with cellars, and have a twelve-window front. The windows are paired 2-light casements with glazing bars to the first and second floors, and feature engraved storeybands. A decorative stucco cornice and parapet, with raised sections over projecting bays, tops the facade. The entrances on the right-hand side have moulded three-panel doors with decorative overlights in splayed reveals, moulded architraves, and six-over-six sashes to the left. Rusticated stucco detailing is also present.

Inside No. 2, a staircase features stick balusters, a swan neck rail, and a turned newel. The attic has a 19th-century plank door. The second floor includes a four-panel door, two wall cupboards with two-panel doors, and two two-panel doors. On the first floor are two four-panel doors with architraves, a cornice, a mid-19th century hob-grate, and window architraves. The ground floor exhibits a cornice, a panelled window riser, two wall cupboards, and an architrave to the rear window. The cellar has oak steps, a four-panel door, brick lining, and a washing copper.

No. 6 includes a staircase similar to that of No. 2, and a cast-iron floorlight. The second floor has a 19th-century fireplace and a wall cupboard to the front, along with two and four-panel doors. The first floor contains a 19th-century fireplace with relief decoration, four-panel doors, and a wall cupboard. The ground floor features four-panel doors.

No. 10 retains a staircase consistent with Nos. 2 and 6, and first-floor ceiling cornices and door architraves.

No. 12’s staircase is the same as Nos. 2 and 6 up to the second floor, with an attic featuring a vaulted ceiling. The second floor retains an early 19th-century fireplace. The first floor has a 20th-century grate in a 19th-century surround, and a 19th-century fireplace. The ground floor contains wall cupboards and four and six-panel doors. The cellar is partly stone-lined.
