Description

Wootton is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century, with alterations and an extension added in the late 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble, features timber framing, and has a Tyrolean finish render on the center and left upper floor. The roof is slate, and there are two local-style external stone stacks at the rear. The building has a T-plan layout, with the head facing north and a 19th-century brick and timber-framed extension to the west, while the east arm is over a cellar.

The farmhouse is two stories tall and has three windows on the south elevation. The central arm features a brick plinth and a late 19th-century canted bay window with a six-light casement on each facet. To the left on the ground floor is a six-light late 19th-century casement, with a three-light casement above it. To the right of the entry in the right arm, there are contemporary three- and two-light casements, and this arm has a circa 1900 glazed door under a hood. The late 19th-century extension to the left includes brick panels made from reused timbers. The east elevation also has a canted bay window similar to the one on the south side.

At the rear, the lateral stacks are very large, with the eastern stack featuring multiple steps. Inside, the kitchen in the west arm has beams with run-out chamfer stops, and the roof above it has straight wind-braces. The principal east room, which is over the cellar, may be an 18th-century addition. The trusses of the main range behind the projecting arm have cambered ties on arch braces and queen posts to collars. The principal ground floor room of the projecting arm contains a 17th-century cupboard set in a niche on the west side.
