Description
Granary located about 25 yards south of Ash Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of finely coursed sandstone rubble, brick, sandstone dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with four bays aligned east to west, and includes a cellar, two storeys, and an attic.
The north elevation displays four windows with lintels beneath relieving arches and diamond-section transoms that create a louvre effect. The ground floor has three windows with mid-19th century shutters and a ledged door positioned to the left of centre. There is a cellar entry to the right of centre featuring a 3-centred head and barrel drop. The building has dressed quoins and verges with kneelers at the gables.
On the east elevation, stone tallet stairs lead over a dog-kennel to a 18th century ledged door with strap hinges that opens to the first floor. There is a central attic opening with diamond-section oak transoms. The south elevation has blind openings with brick panels on the first floor.
Inside, the granary features a longitudinal barrel vault in the three western bays. The eastern bay of the attic has its southern half partitioned off, adjacent to the 18th century oak dog-leg stairs. The trusses in the west have two collars, with the lower collars supported by angle struts from the principals, while the east truss has an interrupted tie-beam and collar.
