Description
Ashe Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to 1740, as indicated by a plaque, and features a lintel inscribed with "Mr George Roberts/ Nov 17th 1739". The building is constructed of brick, finely coursed sandstone rubble, and sandstone dressings, topped with hipped Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks. It has an L-plan layout, with the main range running east to west and a wing extending south at the west end. The farmhouse includes a cellar, two storeys, and attics.
On the north elevation, there are three windows with glazing bar sashes, featuring channelled voussoirs and projecting keystones. There is a narrow central window, gabled dormers with 2-light casements, and a central doorway that has channelled voussoirs, jambs, and head, along with a dropped keystone, transom light, and a 6-panelled door. To the right side, there is a lower wing with a 2-light central first-floor casement, a central late 19th-century door with the inscribed lintel "Mr George Roberts/ Nov 17th 1739", a 3-light casement to the left, and a late 20th-century window to the right.
The south elevation features the year 1740 on a plaque located on the verged gable of the lower wing on the left side. The centre of the main block has a semi-circular brick staircase tower, which includes a 2-light casement and a hipped roof at the top. The west elevation has a stable door and blocked vent slits in the lower range, suggesting that it was initially designed as a granary extension. The interior, which was not inspected, is noted to have a stone newel within the staircase tower according to the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
