Description

Whitfield is a late 17th-century farmhouse located in Marstow, with later alterations. The building is constructed of squared sandstone with a hipped Welsh slate roof, and has sandstone and brick external end stacks. It is arranged in a roughly L-shape, with one arm extending east and the other north, and includes a cellar, two storeys, and attics.

The south elevation features three windows with 2-light steel casements. A central glazed door is sheltered by a 20th-century canopy supported by acanthus brackets, with moulded string courses above each storey. A two-light mullioned window is positioned on the right-hand side, illuminating the cellar, with a cellar entry to the left. The east elevation has three gabled dormers, and mainly 20th-century windows, although there are two first-floor sash windows with glazing bars to the right. Another two-light mullioned window provides access to the cellar to the left of an external stack.

Inside, a late 17th-century, four-flight dog-leg staircase rises from the ground floor, featuring half-landings, bulbous balusters, and deeply moulded strings. A ground floor room on the south-east side retains late 17th-century plasterwork to the ceiling, comprising a garlanded circular motif at the centre, surrounded by four smaller circular designs.
