Description

This outbuilding, likely a detached kitchen, is situated about 5 yards north of Castle Farmhouse. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the mid-19th century. The structure is partly made of handmade brick with blue brick dressings, and partly timber-framed with rendered infill. It features a stone-tiled roof laid in diminishing courses. The building has an L-plan layout, consisting of a two-bay range aligned north to south, with a two-bay wing to the north-east. It is a single storey with an attic, although the framing is not visible from the outside.

The main east elevation includes a large ledged and battened door. The north-east wing has an original mullioned and transomed window, along with a doorway that has a moulded frame and a shaped inner head. There is an attic light in the south gable end and two additional original windows on the ground floor of the west elevation. Attached to the south side of the north-east wing is a 19th-century lean-to outshut.

Inside, the cross-frames feature three rows of square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and there are collar and tie-beam trusses with struts. The main ceiling beams are stop-chamfered. A large chimney is located at the junction of the ranges, which includes a bread oven.
