Description
The outbuilding located to the north of Church Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed structure built from local limestone rubble, featuring large, carefully laid quoins and a dressed stone doorway. The main elevation faces west and includes a central doorway with dressed and chamfered jambs topped by a 2-centred chamfered arch. There are signs of possible small windows or vents on either side of the doorway, but these are blocked and hard to identify. The building has a moderately pitched roof covered in profiled steel sheeting.
The right gable wall was partially rebuilt in the mid-19th century to include a redbrick chimney for the bakehouse, which rises above the ridge line. The left gable is adjacent to a lower structure, possibly a donkey stable, which features a boarded door and a dressed vent to the right. There is a straight joint between this stable and the barn. A corrugated iron roof leans against the taller back wall. The rear wall of the barn is plain, except for a central window that appears to have been added in the mid-19th century, although the 16th-century kitchen likely had some form of windows.
Inside, the building retains a large stone fireplace, which was adapted when it became the farm bakehouse in the mid-19th century. This fireplace includes a brick-built washing copper that was added around 1930 when the building was converted into a wash-house. The roof structure has mostly been replaced.
