Description

Lower Porthkerry Farmhouse is a two-section building, with the older section located to the west. It features cement render over local rubblestone and has gable end stone chimneys, with the larger chimney positioned on the right. The roof is covered with combed wheat-reed thatch, which has decorative ridge sweeps that extend down over two small casement windows at eaves level. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has two larger casement windows on the ground floor. At the rear of this section, there is a later single-storey extension with a lean-to roof. The original build and the east gable of this section are blind.

To the right (east) of the original section, there is a two-storey extension that features two casement windows and has exposed local stone walls with ashlar dressing under a Welsh slate roof. Beyond this extension, there are three additional bays where an agricultural building of the same construction has been incorporated into the house. This part includes two windows and a central glazed door below, along with three windows above, all of which are modern factory units set in similar dressed stone surrounds. A chimney has been added to the rear, along with more modern casement windows.

The interior details were not available during the resurvey. However, in the earlier (west) section of the house, it is reported that the hall retains stop-chamfered beams and exposed joists, as well as a large fireplace with a wooden bressummer at the east end. To the left of the fireplace, there is said to be a former winding stone stair leading to the upper floor, which is believed to have a stone cross-slab roof. Boarded ledged doors and a timber roof structure with pegged trusses are also said to remain. These details have been documented by RCAHMW, but the house underwent major improvements around 1999, so not all features may still be present. In the later (east) section, there is said to be a wooden stair.
