Description
Rhoose Council School is a single-storey building constructed of red and orange brick, featuring Portland stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs with red ridge tiles. The layout consists of two quadrangles separated by a hall that runs directly behind the main front range, which is aligned parallel to the street. The main elevation showcases a balanced design with a central entrance block, set-back wings, and projecting end pavilions that form the gable ends of the side ranges.
The entrance features a stone portico supported by paired Tuscan columns, which hold up an entablature inscribed with "RHOOSE COUNCIL SCHOOL." Above the portico is a coat-of-arms with the date 1931. Behind this portico are stone-framed double doors flanked by 6 over 6 pane sash windows. A hipped roof sits above, with the top of the hall gable visible behind it. The flanking ranges have red brick walls laid in stretcher bond, with an orange brick plinth and a white painted cill band separating them. There are twelve 6 over 6 pane sashes beneath a modillion cornice. The pavilions feature three 6 over 9 sashes with a modillioned cornice and pedimental gable. Various brick stacks are present on the roofs.
The side elevations display fourteen windows, arranged slightly unevenly and differing between the east and west sides. These windows are 6 over 6 pane sashes with a 3-pane transom above, and the eaves are adorned with a modillion cornice. The rear of the building includes ranges with hipped ends and a gabled hall at the center, creating two courtyards.
The interior was not inspected during the resurvey, but it follows a standard plan with offices, a hall, and a library located in the central spine, while classrooms are arranged around the edges, facing outward with corridors leading to the courtyards.
