Description

Upper Porthkerry Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century, though heavily altered and obscured by overgrown vegetation. It is constructed of local rubble stone, with a whitewashed render finish, and has a thatched wheat-reed roof displaying a ridged patterning and deep eyebrows typical of the West Country style. Three square rubble chimney stacks are present. The building has an L-shaped frontage and a single-depth range, with an attached rear wing.

The south-facing main elevation features four windows, which are wooden casements with glazing bars. To the left of a plain entrance door, sheltered by a thatched hood supported on wooden brackets, there are two windows. A further window is situated on the right-hand side. The first-floor casements have been replaced, while the lower ones are from the 19th century. Gable end stacks are present, and a third stack is located to the left of the entrance door, in what was formerly the position of the hearth-passage. Two attic windows are set into the east gable, either side of the stack. The rear wing is a full two storeys in height, with a lateral chimney stack.

The main entrance opens into a cross-passage, leading to the original two-cell house on the left. This room unusually retains its original partition. Inside, moulded beams are present, alongside a 1930s fireplace. The original positions for the stair and entry are blocked, but can still be discerned. A new stair was inserted into the cross-passage, likely in the mid-19th century, incorporating part of the earlier stair. The other rooms contain no visible historic features, and only the ends of some principal rafters are visible.
