Description
Castle Close is a converted barn, likely built in the early 18th century and transformed into four houses in the late 20th century. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill sitting on a rubble base, featuring a stone-tiled roof with diminishing courses on the south side and a machine-tiled roof on the north. It consists of seven framed bays arranged east to west, with a single-bay wing attached to the north side of the western bays. The building has two storeys.
The framing includes four rows of square panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with solid braces in the upper corners. The roof structure comprises collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and V-struts above the collar at the gable end of the main range, and a similar truss with raking struts in the north wing.
On the south front elevation, all windows are 20th-century casements, including three three-light windows and nine single-light windows on the ground floor, along with seven single-light windows and one single-light window on the first floor. There are also four 20th-century doors. The building is prominently located facing the Church of St Mary Magdalene, contributing to its group value.
