Description
The Dutch barn at Lulham Court Farm, built in 1885, is a notable structure that may have originally functioned as a silage clamp. It features red brick square piers that support a timber roof covered in pantiles. The piers are arranged in three rows of seven, including a central colonnade, and show signs of missing bricks along their lengths. The entire building stands over a pit similar to that of a silage clamp. The unique design of the central piers, which may have been intended for internal ventilation, indicates that this structure was likely not just a simple Dutch barn, but possibly an earlier and experimental version of the nearby silage clamp. This barn is one of the earliest remaining examples of the introduction of silage making in England.
