Description
MARSTOW CP SO 51 NE 8/91 Two barns and granary about 30 yards north-east of Marstow Court
GV II
Two barns and granary. Probably C17 to early C19. Timber-frame, sandstone rubble and weatherboarding; Welsh slate and pantile roofs. Long three-part range aligned north/south consisting of five-bay barn to south with adjoining six-bay barn and four-bay granary to north. West elevation: south barn has four vent loops to left-hand side of double-leaved doors to threshing floor and another six loops to right; Welsh slate roof. Central barn also has two rows of vent slits and ledged two-leaved doors to threshing floor to left of centre; pantiled roof. Granary, to north, has two levels, tallet stairs rising from north and ledged door to upper floor to right of which is a weatherboarded area; pantiled roof. Interior of small barn, central barn and granary each have triple angle strut trusses. To the south the granary is divided by a sandstone cross-wall beyond which it forms a spatially uninterrupted but lower extension of the central barn. The two southernmost bays have weatherboarded, square-panelled framed side-walls which are divided by a truss with a pair of curved cruck-like principals. The other trusses have raking struts from ties which have straight-cut chamfer stops to their undersides. Similar chamfer-stops appear on some of the posts of the wall-framing.
