Description

This building complex consists of a barn, cowhouse, and granary, likely dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and brick arches, topped with Welsh slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. The structure is arranged in an L-shape, featuring a ten-bay barn that runs roughly north to south, with the cowhouse and granary extending east from the south end.

The barn's west elevation showcases two rows of vent slits and features two raking-top porches located about a third of the way in from each end, each equipped with two-leaved ledged doors. The gables are adorned with verges, owl holes, and additional vent slits. Inside, the barn has trusses with collars that are supported by twin posts from the tie-beams.

The cowhouse and granary consist of seven bays that decrease in height from west to east, although they maintain a two-storey structure throughout. The north elevation includes late 19th-century brick tallet stairs rising from the east to the left-hand side, along with vent slits. To the right, there are two first-floor windows, each with two lights divided by diamond-section oak mullions, as well as two doors—one with a segmental head and the other square-headed. The east gable features a central ledged door beneath a brick arch, two rows of vent slits, and an owl hole. The interior of the west part contains king-post trusses, while the lower section to the east has collar trusses supported by two posts, which are reinforced by curved braces beneath the principals.

This barn, cowhouse, and granary help define the farmyard to the west of Whitecross Farmhouse and are included for their group value.
