Description

The barn and attached granary, located about 20 yards north-east of Penny Pit, likely dates from the 17th century, with significant extensions from the 18th century and alterations from the 19th century. The structure features a sandstone rubble plinth and a timber frame, incorporating some brick and woven infill, but is primarily weatherboarded with a pantiled roof. It is designed in an L-shape, with an older three-bay section extending northwards and a probable four-bay section extending westwards towards the granary.

The south elevation includes a stable door to the left of the center and two-leaved doors to the right of the center. The west elevation of the northern arm has one panel of riven oak infill to the left of full-height ledged doors leading to the threshing floor in the southernmost bay. Inside, the barn features massive tie-beams in the north/south range, with a double tie-beam at the southern end that supports the roofing of the later east/west range. Two closely set threshing floors, arranged at right angles, appear to have been created.

The granary, likely built in the early 19th century, is constructed of sandstone rubble and has a pantiled roof. It consists of three bays and two levels. The south elevation features brick segmental heads over ground floor openings, with one opening to the left and a doorway to the right, along with two square-headed loft openings. The north elevation includes stone tallet stairs that lead to an upper-level entry on the left side. The interior of the granary has pegged king-post trusses. This building is included for its group value.
