Description
New Mills Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century, with later alterations. It features a timber-frame and sandstone rubble construction, topped with Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with arms extending roughly southwards and eastwards. It has a cellar, two storeys, and attics.
On the west elevation, there is a centrally placed 6-pane late 19th-century window below the eaves, and beneath it, a similar window with nine panes. To the right, there is a 2-light glazing bar casement, and below this is a segmentally-headed entry leading to the cellar with a ledged door. A large side stack is present, and to the extreme left, there is another 6-pane window beneath a small hipped roof projection. The main entry to the ground floor is from the north side through an early 20th-century gabled porch.
The south elevation displays some exposed framing on the right-hand side. Inside, the north side of the east/west range has exposed square framing, along with a 2-light 18th-century wrought iron casement, which is surrounded by 19th-century additions. The kitchen in the northeast corner contains a bread oven and a copper. The trusses of the east/west range feature raking struts, while the north gable of the north/south range has an unusual pattern of angle struts.
