Description
The churchyard walls and gate piers located to the north-west and north-east of the Church of St Mary were likely built in 1869, possibly by W Chick. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the walls enclose the churchyard from the road to the north and extend southwards for about 20 yards at the west end, wrapping around the east end of the church's apse. The walls feature stepped gabled coping, standing approximately three to four feet high, with roll moulding at the apex of the gable coping and a second roll moulding near the base. Weathered buttresses are present, and the gate piers are octagonal with stepped pointed cappings and large broach stops at their bases. An oak gate, dating from the early 19th century, with two spear-headed open panels, is situated between the piers leading to the vestry.
