Description
Birch House is an early to mid-19th century house located on the south side of Much Birch. It is constructed of sandstone and stucco, with a hipped Welsh slate roof and sandstone stacks. The house sits on a rectangular plan, with its main garden front facing south-east. It includes a cellar and has two storeys.
The south-east elevation features four windows, all with glazing bar sashes and hoodmoulds. The ground floor windows are similar in design but deeper, with a French casement on the left-hand side. Weathered pilasters with recessed panels are attached to the corners, and a plain band runs along the facade. Wrought iron piers support a full-width concave-roofed canopy over the ground floor. The side elevations have similar windows, but with four-centred heads and hoodmoulds to both storeys. Blind windows behind glazing bars are found in the ground and first floor corners of the main front. The north-east return has a porch with a triangular-headed entry.
Inside, the hall features a stained-glass fanlight and a cornice decorated with palmettes. The dining room has a cornice with an egg-and-dart and rosettes. A two-flight dog-leg staircase has stick balusters, a mahogany handrail, and carved tread ends. The cellar is stone vaulted.
