Description

The Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with extensions from the 17th century and alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill on a rubble base, some painted rubble walling, and painted brick replacement walling. The roof is machine-tiled with a brick stack located at the rear center of the ridge.

The building consists of two plus two framed bays aligned north to south. The two northernmost bays are original and include an external rubble chimney with tiled offsets and a diagonal rubble stack at their north end. The two southernmost bays are likely an 18th-century addition and have a smaller external chimney with a brick stack at the south gable end. The structure is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The original part of the house has two panels from the sill to the wall-plate, while the addition features three panels and scantling timber. A short straight upper corner brace is visible in the older part, but no trusses are exposed externally.

On the east front elevation, all windows are 2-light 20th-century leaded casements, with seven on the ground floor and three dormers—one with a gabled roof and two with raking-top roofs. The main entrance, located in the northernmost bay, has a flat canopy supported by straight timber brackets and features a 20th-century door.
