Description
Henwood is a small country house dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed rubble and features a hipped slate roof. It has a square plan with low flanking pavilions, with the northeast side concealing attached farm buildings.
The garden front, facing southeast, is two storeys high and includes a central full-height segmental bow window, which has a projecting stone band at the ground floor and a moulded cornice. The window arrangement consists of one + three + one glazing bar sashes, with the ground floor bow window featuring fifteen panes. To the left, the gabled pavilion has a blind Diocletian window in the gable above a sash window, while the pavilion to the right is entirely blind. The entrance is located in the right-hand return wall and is covered by a flat canopy supported by three Doric columns.
The range of stables includes some remnants of 17th-century framing but is primarily built of brick. The attached hop kilns are circular and topped with conical roofs.
Inside, there is a 17th-century overmantel featuring paired Ionic and Corinthian columns arranged in two tiers, adorned with strapwork ornamentation on the panelling. This overmantel is located in the room at the south corner, while the room at the east corner contains a Gothic overmantel flanked by Gothic cupboards.
