Description
The Dilwyn War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922 by WG Storr Barber, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is situated at the entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary.
The memorial features a statue of a soldier in mourning, with his head bowed and hand resting on a reversed rifle. This statue is mounted on a plinth and base, which are surrounded by a low wall.
On the eastern side of the plinth, the main inscription is presented in incised and black-painted lettering, stating: ‘TO THE HONOUR AND GLORY / OF GOD, AND IN GRATEFUL / REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH WHO MADE / THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / IN THE GREAT WAR, AND / WHOSE NAMES ARE WRITTEN / HERE, THIS MEMORIAL IS / ERECTED BY THEIR RELATIVES / AND FRIENDS.’ The names of the fallen soldiers are listed on the south face of the plinth and base, along with a dedication to those lost in the Second World War.
