Description
The Kimbolton War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920 and attributed to the sculptor William G Storr-Barber. It is made of carved stone and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St James, to the south-west of the west tower.
The memorial features a Latin cross with floral decoration, which is positioned on a tapered octagonal column. This column is set on a two-stage octagonal pedestal that has angled moulding between the dado and the plinth. The entire structure rests on a square platform.
On the west face of the dado, there is a carved-stone scallop shell, the symbol of St James, above which the years '1939 – 1945' are inscribed. The names, regiments, places, and dates of death of three men from the parish who died during the Second World War are engraved on three sides of the dado.
The west face of the plinth bears the inscription:
AM D G [Ad maiorem Dei gloriam, for the greater glory of God] / THIS SIGN OF VICTORY IS SET / ON A HOMELAND HILL BY THE / PEOPLE OF THIS PLACE IN PER- / PETUAL MEMORY OF THE SHINING / SACRIFICE OF THE MEN WHO / CROSSED THE SEAS IN DEFENCE / OF OUR HOMES AND LIBERTIES / 1914 – 1918.
The names, regiments, places, and dates of death of 16 men from the parish who died in the First World War are inscribed on four sides of the plinth.
