Description

The Old Workhouse is a house that has been divided into tenements. It has an early 16th century core that was extended during the late 17th or early 18th century, with further additions made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The earlier part of the house is timber-framed, featuring sections of wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill, along with a sandstone rubble plinth. The later additions and stacks are built with brick, and the roof is covered with Welsh slate.

The building consists of two framed bays aligned east to west, with a cross-wing at the eastern end. There are rubble additions to the east and at the rear, with gable-end stacks. The house is two storeys high.

On the south front, the upper storey of the two earlier bays on the left was formerly jettied and has a moulded bressummer, although it is now underbuilt. There is a 12-pane casement window set in an opening that was once larger, with a moulded, slightly projecting sill to the left, and a 4-pane casement window to the right. The ground floor features a 2-light casement window to the left and two single-light windows to the right of a ledged door, which has a simple lean-to canopy above it.

To the right is the cross-wing, where the skeletal frame is visible. There is a window opening with a projecting sill on the upper floor and traces of a similar sill on the ground floor. The gable end of the sandstone rubble addition to the right has a 2-light casement window in the gable and a ledged door on the ground floor.
