Description

Shortgrove Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with extensions from the late 17th century and some alterations from the mid-19th century. It was restored in the 1970s to 1980s. The building features a timber-frame structure with rendered infill set on a coursed rubble plinth and has a tile roof. It is designed in an L-plan, with ranges extending to the south-west and south-east.

On the north-east wall of the south-east range, there is a lateral brick stack partially enclosed by an outshut, while the former range has a lateral rubble stack on its south-east wall. The north-west front includes a gabled and jettied cross-wing to the left, which is two storeys high and features a 4-light 20th-century oriel window on the first floor, a 3-light casement window below, and a 2-light casement with plank weathering in the outshut to the left. The range to the right is one storey with an attic, illuminated by three gabled dormers. The ground floor has five 20th-century casements, mostly of two lights, except for the two flanking the entrance to the left of centre, which are of three lights. The entrance door is also 20th-century and is counter-boarded.

The framing of the cross-wing consists of two square panels high on each floor, with carved scroll brackets supporting the wall-plate. The gable end features three struts to the collar and V-struts in the apex. The other range has three square panels high. Inside, the farmhouse has exposed chamfered and stopped beams.
