Description

Ailey Farmhouse and the attached granary are located in Kinnersley and date from probably the late 16th century to early 17th century, with later alterations. The farmhouse is timber-framed with brick infill, while the granary extension is made of sandstone rubble. The roofs are covered with sandstone slate and tiles, featuring a sandstone rubble side stack. The building has a T-plan layout with a cross-wing at the west end of the east/west range. It is two storeys high with an attic.

The north elevation displays three 1:1 windows, which are 2-light late 19th-century casements, with a gable front on the right-hand side. The ground floor has similar windows. The gable features a 2-light late 20th-century window to the left of the centre, and the ground floor of the gable has a 4-light moulded mullioned and transomed window with a heavy oak cill. Above this, a restored pair of brackets supports the jettied first storey. The main range has an entry with a 6-panelled early 19th-century door located immediately to the left of the gable.

The frame of the cross-wing has two square panels from the plinth to the first floor, above which are three panels to the wall-plate. The main range has walls that are four panels high. The granary, likely built in the early 19th century, features two gabled attic dormers, each with a 2-light casement. The ground floor has two casements with blue brick segmental heads. Brick tallet stairs rise from the front of the left-hand return to a ledged loft door. The interior has not been inspected. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments refers to Ailey Farmhouse as Upper Ailey Farm.
