Description

Upper Newton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century to the early 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of timber-frame with plaster infill, partially finished in roughcast, and has brick and sandstone rubble extensions. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate and tile, featuring sandstone rubble and brick stacks. The building has a T-plan layout with a cross-wing at the north end and stands two storeys high with an attic.

The east elevation displays a 2:1 window arrangement, featuring early 20th-century casements, with a gable front on the right side. This gable showcases exposed timber-framing supported by a moulded bressummer and curved brackets. The corner posts exhibit vertical mouldings that extend into tassel-like motifs. There is an entry to the left of the gable, which is accessed through a glazed early 20th-century gabled porch. To the right, there is a sandstone rubble lean-to, likely from the 18th century, which connects to a timber-framed outbuilding that was probably once a granary.

The west elevation includes an early 20th-century brick porch and two entries. The south elevation features two roughcast gables with early 20th-century windows, and a canted bay window on the first floor of the right-hand gable. Inside, the farmhouse has a stone flagged floor, heavy moulded ceiling beams that form panels, and large raking-strut trusses. There is also a ledged 17th-century door in the attic.
