Description

First World War memorial with later additions for the Second World War.

MATERIALS: Aberdeen granite.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands in a prominent location beside the entrance to the churchyard at its south-west corner, close to the Church of St James. The memorial comprises an Aberdeen granite obelisk with a gently tapering three-tiered square plinth and three-stepped square stone base.

The main inscription in gold-painted lettering on the south-west face of the plinth reads: IN MEMORIAM/ TO/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO SERVED/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS/ 1914 – 1918/ ALSO TO THOSE WHO SERVED IN THE WAR OF/ 1939 – 1945.
