Description
The Royal Oak Hotel is a late 16th century timber-framed building, designed in an L-shape and featuring three storeys plus a cellar. It was refaced in the late 18th century with painted brick and includes dentil blocks beneath the eaves. The roof is tiled and gable-ended. The building showcases exposed timber-framing in the rear wing and in the covered entrance to the yard. There are five double-hung sash windows with three lights and glazing bars, flat brick arches, and keyblocks, while the ground floor windows have leaded panes. The central door opening is round-headed with a large fanlight and deep reveals. To the left, there is a wide elliptical arched carriageway with a keyblock, and a round-headed doorway on the right. Inside, the dining room features original panelling with an enriched cornice and an overmantle with enriched pilasters between the bays. The building has queen-post roofs and rubble walling in the cellars. The Royal Oak Hotel, along with Nos 1 to 4 and Nos 6 to 11, forms a group with Nos 2 to 8 New Street.
