Description
1 The Southend is a building dating from around 1600. It has three storeys and a cellar, featuring gables on the east and north fronts. The timber-framed structure has a top floor that projects over both the north and east fronts, supported by posts and brackets against the storey below. On the first floor, there are remains of an oriel window. The north front has an overhanging first floor that extends over the pavement, supported by five wooden posts that taper downwards, resting on stone bases and featuring bracketed heads and moulded bases. These posts support a moulded bressummer. The east front has two windows on the first floor, which are two slightly canted three-light oriels on carved brackets, and two small casements on the second floor. The ground floor features a Victorian projecting shop front with a narrow fascia and a cornice with curved ends. The north front has blocked windows except for a casement in the gable. The roof is tiled. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 4, the Royal Oak Hotel, and Nos 6 to 11 on the same street, as well as Nos 2 to 8 on New Street.
