Description
Well Cottages, also known as Nos 1 & 2, is a house dating from the early 17th century, with some parts clad in the early 19th century and further alterations made in the mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill, which is almost entirely covered in brick, and has a slate roof. It consists of three framed bays arranged in an east-west direction.
The south front has two storeys and includes two windows with 2-light casements from the 20th century. On the ground floor, there are two 2-light casements beneath cambered brick heads, flanking an entrance that has a wooden architrave and a ledged and boarded door. To the right, there is a second entrance with a lean-to slated canopy, a 3-pane overlight, and another ledged and boarded door.
The east gable end displays exposed framing that was formerly jettied, featuring a chamfered bressummer. It has two square panels high to the first floor, supported by straight angle braces. The gable truss includes three struts to the collar, with a king-post above and trenched purlins.
