Description
This building is an outbuilding located about 25 yards north-east of Swinmoor. It is a barn that was later converted into a stable and is now part of a large cow house. The structure likely dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It features a timber frame with walls made of sandstone rubble, brick, and weatherboarding, topped with a part-hipped corrugated iron roof. The building consists of two structural bays that are aligned roughly east to west.
The east gable includes a segmental-headed opening to the left of a central ledged door, which also has a segmental head. Above the door, there is a central opening set in weatherboarding, and a sandstone plinth extends to the base of the ground floor opening, which is topped with brickwork. The north wall is weatherboarded, and the entire structure is surrounded by a late 20th-century cowhouse, which is not of special interest, on all sides except the east.
Inside, the building retains two complete pairs of cruck blades, each featuring ties, spurs, collars, and three large purlins supported by heavy principals on each slope. The north wall showcases framing with two large square panels that extend from the cill to the wall-plate.
