Description

Old Sufton is a country house that was formerly the seat of the Hereford family and is now associated with Sufton Court. The building has a core that dates back to the 16th century and has been altered and remodeled during the 18th and mid-19th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure with sections of wattle-and-daub and brick infill, along with brick and sandstone rubble refacing. The north-west front is rendered, and the house has slate roofs.

The layout is L-shaped, with the main range running north-east to south-west and a cross-wing at the north-east end. There is a through-passage and a gable end stack on the north-west side, along with two additional lateral stacks on the main range's north-west face. The house has two storeys and a cellar.

On the north-west front, glazing bar sash windows flank the stack at the gable end of the cross-wing. To the left of the first lateral stack, there is a two-storey semi-circular bow addition that connects with the main range. Two glazing bar sash windows are located beside a doorway that features a semi-circular-headed window at mezzanine level to the right. The doorway has a canopy supported by brackets and a panelled door. To the right of the doorway is a second lateral stack, accompanied by two more glazing bar sash windows. The stacks have a pair of star-plan shafts.

Inside, the building reveals timber-framing and the layout of the earlier house, which included a hall and cross-wing. The first-floor hall has two or three bays with moulded members, and the solar in the cross-wing retains braces with 16th-century painted decoration. The roof is largely from the 19th century, but two trusses in the solar are likely from the 16th century. There is also an 18th-century staircase. Old Sufton has been associated with the Hereford family since the 12th century.
