Description
Sufton Court is a country house built around 1790, attributed to the architect James Wyatt. It is constructed from Bath stone ashlar and features a hipped stone slate roof. The house has a double depth plan with a central entrance and stairwell, and it includes grouped axial stacks. It stands three storeys high, with attics and cellars, and has a mezzanine floor in the north-east corner.
The main front of the house has a layout of 2:1:2 by four bays, with a plinth, string course, and dentilled eaves cornice. There is a central pediment that slightly projects forward, plain sash windows, and a Venetian window in a semi-circular-headed arch on the first floor. A late 19th-century cast iron porch with a half-glazed door adds to the entrance.
Inside, the house is largely intact and features a fine ramped staircase, panelled doors—some with inlay—and main rooms adorned with stuccoed ceiling decorations and contemporary fireplaces. Sufton Court is the focal point of a landscaped park designed by Repton in 1797 and has been the seat of the Hereford family.
