Description

Christ Church is a former parish church built between 1854 and 1856 by architect George Frederick Bodley. The church is constructed from coursed and square sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and has a 20th-century tiled roof. It features a nave, south porch, south aisle, and chancel, designed in the style of around 1300. The nave has four bays and three windows with two trefoiled lights in the south aisle, along with a lean-to roof to the east of the gabled porch. At the west end, there is a gabled bell cote. The chancel consists of two bays, with one window featuring two trefoil-headed lights and a cinquefoil in a roundel with a hood-mould to the west, and a three-light window to the east with trefoils and cusping on the outer lights surrounding a central trefoil-headed light, which has a trefoil roundel above, a hood-mould, a central stepped buttress, and diagonal buttressing at the east end. Inside, the nave has a trussed rafter roof, while the chancel boasts an open wagon roof. The south arcade consists of three bays with simple chamfered piers that lack capitals. Bodley trained with G E Street under Sir G Gilbert Scott from 1845 to 1850, and this church is one of his early commissions.
