Description

This is a First World War memorial, constructed around 1920 from stone. It stands in a prominent roadside location, positioned in front of the primary school and close to Christ Church, which is also a listed building. The memorial is composed of a tall Celtic wheel-cross with a tapering shaft resting on a tapering rectangular pedestal and a single-stepped base. The face and shaft of the cross feature carved interlace decoration. The south face of the plinth is inscribed in leaded lettering: β€œIN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THESE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR. A.D. 1914 – 1918/ (14 NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.”
