2/47 Wheeler memorial about 4 metres south of south-west corner of nave of Church of St Mary

GV II

Pedestal tomb. Thomas Wheeler, died 1816. Ashlar. Square plan cuboid on plinth with 3-stepped base, surmounted by pyramid, apex broken off; recessed rectangular inscription panel on south side, armorial cartouche on west. Inscription: "In memory/ of/ Thomas Wheeler/ formerly/ of Burford/ in the/ [ ....................... ] / [ ..... ]/ of this of this parish/ gentleman/ He died June 16th/ 1816/ Aged 69 years". This is a good example of stone masonry and enhances the setting of the church; it contributes to the group value of the other memorials in the churchyard.
