Description

The Wheeler memorial is a pedestal tomb located about 4 metres south of the south-west corner of the nave of the Church of St Mary. It commemorates Thomas Wheeler, who died in 1816. The tomb is made of ashlar and has a square plan cuboid shape on a plinth with a three-stepped base, topped by a pyramid with the apex broken off. On the south side, there is a recessed rectangular inscription panel, and an armorial cartouche is featured on the west side. The inscription reads: "In memory/ of/ Thomas Wheeler/ formerly/ of Burford/ in the/ [ ....................... ] / [ ..... ]/ of this parish/ gentleman/ He died June 16th/ 1816/ Aged 69 years." This memorial is a fine example of stone masonry and enhances the church's setting, contributing to the group value of other memorials in the churchyard.
