Description

Lane Cottages, a farmhouse now divided into two tenements, likely dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some later alterations. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and timber framing, mostly rendered, with slate roofs and a local stone stack featuring a rendered shaft on the west side. It has an L-shaped plan with two bays in each arm, connected at the north-west corner. The east/west arm has two storeys, while the north/south arm has one storey and an attic.

The west elevation features a prominent lateral stack, with a three-light late 19th-century casement window on the ground floor and a similar two-light window above it on the first floor. To the right, there is exposed timber-framing with brick nogging and rubble walling, which includes a three-light steel mid-20th-century window on the ground floor, and above it, a dormer with weatherboards containing a broad three-light late 20th-century casement. The entrance is located on the rendered north side of the east/west range, which has late 19th-century to early 20th-century casements. The east gable displays exposed rubble with a rubble end stack, while the south side of the same range retains a row of timber-framed panels filled with brick beneath the eaves.
