Description
The Cresswells is a cottage, probably from the 17th century, featuring a timber-frame structure with plaster infill panels and a thatched roof. It has a large external stack at the front gable and is designed in an L-plan, with the main front facing south. The building is one storey with an attic.
On the south elevation, there is a gable to the left with a layout of 1:2 bays. The gable is partially obscured by the external stack and a lean-to. A 19th-century stack also partly covers the central bay, which contains a three-light mid-20th century casement window on the ground floor. Above this, in an eyebrow dormer, is a three-light mid-19th century casement window, while the gable features an early 20th-century two-light casement. There is an early 20th-century ledged door at the gable, and a late 20th-century ledged door leads into the right-hand bay.
At the rear, there is a thatched timber-framed lean-to, possibly from the 18th century. Inside, a beam in the principal room has run-out chamfer stops. The right bay houses a cider press and mill on the ground floor, with a tallet above. The rear lean-to appears to provide a passage that allows movement from the cross-wing to the cider house without passing through the principal room in the central bay.
