Description
This building is a barn and stable, likely dating from the 17th century, located about 20 yards south of Lower Welson Farmhouse. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, resting on a rubble base, with a stone-tiled roof laid in diminishing courses and a machine-tiled roof. The structure is L-shaped, with the barn consisting of four framed bays aligned north to south. It features a wagon bay with opposed cart entries and double doors located in the third bay from the north end, while the north bay of the barn is open for cart access. Adjoining the east side of the southernmost bay is the stable range, which has five or six bays and five doors in its north elevation.
Inside the barn, there are collar and tie-beam end trusses with studs, some intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts, and two tiers of trenched purlins, although the wall-framing is not visible. The interior of the stable has not been inspected. The barn and stable are a prominent feature to the south of Lower Welson Farmhouse and are included for their group value.
